Once again, Grade 11 Tech Design students from Lockerby Composite School are helping patients recover!
Over the last three years, the Recreation Therapy team has developed a successful woodworking group in collaboration with Lockerby Composite School’s grade 11 Design and Technology class. The program goals are to enable patients to use existing physical skills and/or work on fine motor skills, increase socialization, and foster a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction at the completion of their project.
Students developed their own designs for a nestbox/bird feeder using 3D modelling software and later constructed their design using their woodworking skills in the shop. Each design is finally disassembled and put into a kit with directions developed by the students for patients at St. Joseph’s Continuing Care. In a group setting, patients select their kit, assemble, sand, and paint to complete the project. The projects are then placed in a silent auction in June as part of Seniors month activities to help raise funds towards outings, special events, gardening supplies, etc.
Annette has participated in the group weekly and had this to say; “This group is good therapy, it gives you peace of mind and helps you escape your pain. It relaxes your mind. I like to finish what I started”.
Art has found a new leisure interest!
“I come to the group to keep busy so I don’t get bored. I have never done this before.”
Andrew who volunteered with the group said: “It is a good way to connect with patients and to listen to their stories and see them connect with others.”
Over the last three years, the Birdhouse Auction has raised over $800.00 for patient programs. Patients have worked over 20 hrs to build 20 unique creations. This year the Auction will start June 12th and finish at the Senior Month party on June 29th.
A preview of some of the creations! Come and see them on the 2nd-floor Therapy Gym at CCC.
