Mrs. Katie (Kay) Tones celebrated her 100th birthday on October 27, 2017 at St. Joseph’s Continuing Care Centre of Sudbury surrounded by family, friends and staff. Happy Birthday Mrs. Tones!
St. Joseph’s Continuing Care Centre provides specialized care and services to adults requiring slow paced rehabilitation and / or supportive care to maximize their functional potential. The goal is to work with these patients to transition them back to independent living in the community, whether that be home, a retirement residence or in an assisted living environment.

St. Joseph’s Foundation Gala Co-Chairs 2017

St. Joseph’s Foundation hosted their Annual Gala dinner and dance on Saturday, October 21, 2017 at the Caruso Club in Sudbury. The gala event was attended by over three hundred guests who indulged in delectable food, and were treated to live music to dance the night away! The elegant event created memories of an enchanting evening spent in the spirit of giving.
Due to the generosity of the many sponsors, donors and attendees this year’s event raised over $65,000. These funds are being placed toward St. Joseph’s Continuing Care Centre to enhance accessibility for their patients which will build their confidence to embark on their rehabilitative journey to return home. Our gratitude is sincerely extended to all those who gave of their time and money.
St. Joseph’s Continuing Care Centre is a 64-bed complex continuing care hospital located on South Bay Road. Since opening in August 2009, St. Joseph’s Continuing Care Centre has transitioned 2289 individuals back to the community. These are individuals who in most cases would have been deemed ALC.
The Co-Chairs would like to thank everyone for their kind contributions and for spending an evening with them! Mark your calendars! Next year’s Gala is taking place on October 20, 2018.
St. Joseph’s Foundation of Sudbury is a registered charity that promotes the good works of the Sisters of St. Joseph. As a faith based non-profit Foundation, it provides services and programs that are not covered by government funding or operational revenues for St. Joseph’s Villa, St. Joseph’s Continuing Care Centre and Villa St. Gabriel Villa. October 2017 – This past year St. Joseph’s Health Centre established a corporate bursary fund to support education for employees interested in pursuing their own continuing education opportunities. The bursary is funded through proceeds from a portion of the monthly staff 50/50 draw.
St. Joseph’s Health Centre awards education bursaries to reimburse up to 100% of education costs, up to a maximum of $1,000 per year, incurred by regular full-time or regular part-time employees who choose to pursue:

St. Joseph’s Continuing Care Centre staff members kicked off Breast Cancer Awareness month this week by dressing in Pink. Patients voted for their favourite outfit. The winner was Emily Kleen, RPN. As part of St. Joseph’s Continuing Care Centre’s wellness initiative Breast Cancer Awareness activities are planned throughout the month of October.

On August 22, 2017 St. Joseph’s Villa had two special visitors bearing a very generous gift for the Garden Way neighborhood. Representatives from Union Gas, Vince Rodrigue and Michele Roy provided a cheque in the amount of $1000.00 as part of the companies’ Community Improvement Grant. The initiative helps to strengthen communities by donating to local projects accompanied by a volunteer component fulfilled by Union Gas employees.
The money was donated to the Life Enrichment Department who in turn used the donation to fund “Memory Lane” a collection of over 20 nostalgic pictures of Sudbury and surrounding areas that were hung in the neighborhood that is home to residents living with dementia. Ray Thoms, a community historian also came on board for the project and provided the refinished pictures of Sudbury.
The collection has provided the residents of Garden Way with a more meaningful walk throughout their day as well as opportunity to reminiscence on days gone by. Our gratitude is extended to both Union Gas and Mr. Ray Thoms for making this project a meaningful addition to the daily experience of our residents.

St Joseph’s Health Centre of Sudbury was recently honoured with the “GPA Leadership Excellence in Person-Centred Care” Award and was one of only 4 organizations in Canada to earn the award “with distinction” by the Advanced Gerontological Education Centre. The ‘GPA Leadership Excellence in Person-Centred Care’ Awards Recognition Program was developed to acknowledge the continuing commitment of organizations who implement Gentle Persuasive Approaches in the dementia care setting.
The award is given in recognition of extraordinary commitment to the integration of Gentle Persuasive Approaches into organizational policy and processes. St Joseph’s Health Centre has committed to ensuring that every staff member in the organization is given the opportunity to be trained in GPA to ensure that all residents and patients are offered person centred care.
To implement this commitment, the organization has had multiple staff trained as GPA coaches who not only train staff but also act as mentors at the front line and has assigned a GPA Lead role to ensure that training sessions are completed on a monthly (or more) basis. Furthermore, in congruence with GPA philosophy, the organization has also committed to completing a PIECES of my Personhood assessment as residents are admitted. This information is used to understand each resident as a person first, and the information is used to assist staff to understand underlying needs that are causing responsive behaviours. The information collected is used to create a beautiful personalized poster that is placed in the resident’s room with consent which allows all staff members and volunteers get to know our residents, particularly those with dementia, as people first.

Dan Boyd and Joe McDonald from Schuster Boyd McDonald present a cheque in the amount of $35,000 to Melanie Kanerva, Chair of St. Joseph’s Foundation of Sudbury and Jo-Anne Palkovits, President and CEO of St. Joseph’s Health Centre. These funds were raised at the Chip in for Charity Golf tournament sponsored by Schuster Boyd McDonald which took place on August 3rd, 2017 at the Idylwylde Golf and Country Club. The monies will be placed towards the purchase of new mattresses for Villa St. Gabriel Villa.

Funds raised by the St. Joseph’s Foundation of Sudbury help support St. Joseph’s Health Centre; a non-profit organization that provides services for some of the most vulnerable citizens within the Greater Sudbury Community.
St. Joseph’s Health Centre oversees the operation of the Village of Care Campus located on South Bay Road which includes St. Joseph’s Villa, a 128-bed longterm care home and room with potential growth. In addition, St. Joseph’s Continuing Care Centre, a 64-bed complex continuing care hospital, is co-located on this site. St. Joseph’s Health Centre also operates Villa St. Gabriel Villa, a 128-bed long-term care home located in Chelmsford, Ontario.
