Villa St. Gabriel Villa Has a Successful Accreditation Visit!

As you know, two CARF International surveyors visited Villa St. Gabriel Villa on November 20 and 21 as well as December 1 and 2. The purpose of their visit was to observe us in action, review some of our documentation and conduct interviews with our staff members, patient, families and partners. In doing these things, our surveyors were able to evaluate how well we meet specific standards for quality, resident-centred care, governance and administrative practices.

Villa St. Gabriel Villa decided to pursue accreditation because doing so demonstrates that we are accountable for the quality of our programs and services and committed to the satisfaction of the persons we serve.

Thanks to all your hard work, the surveyors gave us top marks for:

  • Villa St. Gabriel Villa working hard to meet the needs of the
  • Francophone community by becoming a French Language designated facility;
  • Having staff with a strong sense of mission;
  • Having active Resident and Family Councils; and
  • Having a welcoming and home-like environment including a bilingual receptionist.

Now that the accreditation visit is over, CARF International will review the findings to make an accreditation decision. They will notify us of their decision by sending us a written report in early January. The written report, in addition to the decision, will highlight our strengths and identify areas for improvement.

Once the report is received, we will share the results with staff, residents, families, partners and the community at large.

Pascal Sabourin presents a cheque in honour of the Monique Landry-Sabourin Memorial Fund in the amount of $500 to Jo-Anne Palkovits, President and CEO, St. Joseph’s Health Centre and Ray Ingriselli, Site Administrator, Villa St. Gabriel Villa. Since its launch in December 2013, the Fonds commémoratif Monique Landry-Sabourin Memorial Fund has raised $40,000. Funds will be placed towards Villa St. Gabriel Villa.

Schuster Boyd McDonald’s Chip in for Charity Golf Tournament raises $40,000 for St. Joseph’s Foundation

Dan Boyd, Account Representative and Partner at Schuster Boyd McDonald, Joe McDonald, Group Practice Leader – Employee Benefits and Partner, Schuster Boyd McDonald and Josée Clément, Sales and Service Manager, Schuster Boyd McDonald present a cheque in the amount of $40,000 to Jo-Anne Palkovits, President and CEO, St. Joseph’s Health Centre, Melanie Kanerva, Chair of St. Joseph’s Foundation of Sudbury and Gale Prosperi, Vice Chair of St. Joseph’s Foundation of Sudbury. These are funds raised from the Chip in for Charity Golf tournament that took place on August 7th, 2014 and will be placed towards the purchase of sleeping surfaces and staff education for St. Joseph’s Villa.

Increase In Case Mix Index Rates Creates New Positions

We are very pleased to announce that our Case Mix Index (CMI) has increased at both our long- term care facilities. With this change in CMI comes an increase in funding from the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care for our nursing envelopes. This higher funding level has provided an opportunity to increase our PCA staffing at both facilities.

Based on the acuity of the home areas and an in-depth review of the staff mix in all areas and on all shifts, we are pleased to announce that St. Joseph’s Villa is hiring an additional 2.8 FTE Personal Care Assistants and Villa St. Gabriel Villa is hiring an additional 2.4 FTE Personal Care Assistants.

At St. Joseph’s Villa, the CMI increased from 0.9697 in the 2013/14 fiscal year to 0.9868 for the 2014/2015 fiscal year. Likewise, CMI for Villa St. Gabriel Villa increased from 0.9425 in the 2013/14 fiscal year to 0.9690 for the 2014/2015 fiscal year.

The Case Mix Index (CMI) is a classification system used to determine the allocation of financial resources to long-term care homes across the province. Last year our staff engaged in additional training to ensure that appropriate charting was being completed for all residents in their care. Thank you to all staff for their hard work and for their attention and detail to efficiently and accurately charting the appropriate care needs of our residents.
